Employment in 51²èÂ¥ higher than before first lockdown

Employment figures for June 2021 show that the number of people living in 51²èÂ¥ who are in employment is now above the pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.

In June 2021 there were 264,840 people in pay rolled employment living in 51²èÂ¥, 4,614 more than in May 2021 and 1,816 more than February 2020.

51²èÂ¥ is bucking the trend nationally as the UK as a whole still has less people in employment than in February 2020.

Councillor Marc Bayliss cabinet member for Economy and Skills at 51²èÂ¥ said, â€œThis is really positive news for the people of 51²èÂ¥ and shows real resilience from the businesses in the area and the range of support provided throughout the pandemic is having an impact. We know that the past 17 months have been challenging for businesses and for those looking for work and these figures are really encouraging.

“It’s also fantastic to see that 51²èÂ¥ is one of the Counties leading the way in the UK and improving on the figures from before the March 2020 lockdown.â€

51²èÂ¥ and partners are continuing to support business in the county to grow their employee base through apprenticeships and the Kickstart scheme, as well as offering support for those wishing to start a business and information, business support and grants through the 51²èÂ¥ website.
