51²èÂ¥ is winter ready! Temperatures have dropped significantly, and a national cold weather alert is in place for the next few days.

The County Council’s gritters have been going out over the past few evenings spreading salt on the county’s roads to keep people moving and will continue to do this during this cold spell.

As the weather becomes wintrier, the Council has 36 gritting vehicles ready, as well as 54 drivers, 16,750 tonnes of salt stored across 6 depots, and 1,320 grit bins placed across the county.

51²è¥’s gritters are equipped with technology which allows them to be tracked live throughout gritting operations.

Councillor Mike Rouse, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at 51²èÂ¥, said: “Staff at our depots across the county are preparing and working with our Highways teams to ensure the grit hits the road at precisely the right time, to make the roads safe for our residents to travel as the colder weather continues. We have five large barns and a dome filled with enough salt ready to hit the county’s roads, and if and when the county sees significant levels of snow, we have snow ploughs available to be fitted to our gritters, to help clear the roads.â€

Gritters have been on standby from October, which marks the official start of the winter maintenance season and will continue to be so until spring.

Last winter, the teams clocked up more than 50,000 miles across the county.
