About drug use

Drug use can affect your physical and mental health, your family life, relationships and your work or study. Using illegal drugs can also get you into trouble with the law or cause money problems.

Drugs can be broadly divided into three categories based on their main effects.

Drugs may act solely as

  • stimulants (which make you feel alert and like you have lots of energy and confidence
  • depressants (make you feel relaxed and chilled out)
  • hallucinogens (make you view reality in a distorted way)

Quite a few drugs have mixed effects, they carry risks, and you never know how you’ll react to a drug.

Having a problem with drugs can be seriously damaging on your health and on the health and development of your family.

Sources of information, advice and support

There is lots of information, advice and support available for anyone who has a problem with drugs use:

  • speak to your GP if you are concerned about your own use of drugs
  • visit 
  • visit
  • if you are a young person concerned about your own use of drugs, or your parent's use of drugs, you can talk to  free: 0800 1111
  • if you have concerns around a child or young person and feel they may be in need of protection or safeguarding, contact the Family Front Door
  • if you have reason to believe that a child, young person or yourself, is at immediate risk of harm contact the Police on 999

Here4YOUth 51²èÂ¥ is a young person’s alcohol and drug service for anyone up to the age of 18 living in 51²èÂ¥. We also offer advice and support for children, young people and family members to cope with someone else’s drug or alcohol misuse as part of the Here4YOUth 51²èÂ¥ Family Support Service.
