Information about working as a Private Hire and Hackney Carriage driver.

To operate a vehicle in return for payment you need a license. 

Licenses are managed by the six district councils within 51²èÂ¥.

Please note: as part of the process to obtain a license from your district council, you are required to complete Taxi and Private Hire Competency Certificate training, this is delivered by 51²èÂ¥, however you must first apply for your license through your district council.

51²èÂ¥ Taxi and Private Hire Competency Certificate

All District Council policies require applicants for driver licences to obtain the 51²èÂ¥ Taxi and Private Hire Competency Certificate. The Certificate confirms the applicant has the required knowledge and skills to be a licensed taxi driver.

To be issued with a Certificate, applicants must complete a one-day training and assessment course, and a practical driving assessment.
