What are supported internships?

Supported Internships are designed to provide young adults with special educational needs and an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a supportive environment.

This year-long programme will be hosted at 51²èÂ¥ Royal Hospital, offering a unique chance to work in various roles within a busy hospital setting. Interns will be supported by a job coach to aid with new tasks and build relationships, and a guaranteed interview for employment after the programme.

Programme highlights

This DFN Project Search programme is a collaborative effort by Young Adult Learning (YAL) 51²èÂ¥, 51²èÂ¥ Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, 51²èÂ¥, and HFT Learning Allies. Some of the benefits gained from our Supported Internship programme include:

  • tailored support: the programme is specifically designed for young adults with special educational needs, providing the necessary support to thrive in a hospital environment
  • pathway to employment: this internship serves as a stepping stone towards apprenticeships or other employment opportunities, helping interns transition smoothly into the workforce

Bursary support

Interns will be eligible for a £1000 Supported Internship bursary from INclusive 51²èÂ¥. This bursary aims to assist with essential work-related costs such as equipment and travel expenses, ensuring that interns have the resources they need to succeed.
